FWIW, I've heard Leki poles are significantly higher quality than the BD equivalents, and they have similarly-light offerings without the Z system. That still won't fix all the other things wrong with the mechanism (button getting jammed, tensioning line snapping or stretching), but it might help.

If you really want to go that route, I've heard you can drill through the ferrules and add rivets so they don't pop out. I'd stay away from the BD Compactor, Carbon Compactor, Carbon Z or any other pole with their "z-lock" mechanism, even though they're super light and compact. I've gone back to a set of poles with a simple lever-lock mechanism (the Alpine Carbon Cork) and have had no issues since. I also had issues with the push buttons freezing up or not deploying entirely (so the poles would collapse if you put any real force on them). I tried epoxying them back in, and it worked for a bit, but they eventually fell out again. The most common issue seemed to be the shaft getting distorted around the ferrule fitting, then the ferrule coupling thing falling out. I had the same experience with various pairs of BD poles, all with the same ferule system as the Carbon Z. The poles are superlight, which is awesome, but I don't think I want to try my luck with a 3rd pair.Īny good, light, and durable options out there? According to their website, BD seems to have updated the Carbon Z very recently. Similar to the well-known Timberline, The Alpine Meadows differs not only in the hoop pole design, but in the fact that it has doors with full. It has recently become available, as the Alpine Meadows had been discontinued. The second pair had it's internal nylon string (apparently) freeze and snap overnight buried in the snow staking down my tent. Its replacement will be the Alpine Meadows Outfitter 4, which is of the same design, but is built with heavier fabrics. I've been using the BD Carbon Z poles for the past year but have unfortunately broken 2 pairs. wrote: So what's the word when it comes to alpine poles these days? Not exactly the "hottest" topic out there, but we all know that poles make expeditions way better.
